The panel 3 mention of Dan Acton refers to the Daily Illini cartoonist who created Square Lake, a brilliantly idiosyncratic comic that ran next to Blue Rice for years. (There are several Square Lake references throughout the run of Blue Rice, including a crossover about halfway through.)
