Here’s an interesting one.
Generally speaking, I was told to submit my strips no later than 6pm the day before they ran. But the first strip I drew as a Daily Illini employee (#9, just before this one) was submitted at just about exactly 6pm. I guess I waited too long—the next day, our graphics editor ran a Sylvia cartoon (a syndicated comic aimed at middle-aged women with cats) in place of Blue Rice.
In retaliation, I drew this Blue Rice strip in the artistic and writing style of Sylvia.
Only later did I find out that the creator of Sylvia was actually an University of Illinois alum who read the school paper on a regular basis. I actually felt kinda bad about it at one point, but as they say, kindness is a victim of comedy.
